What Is Energeia? Aristotle's Radical Idea That Reality Is a Verb
We live in a world obsessed with nouns — objects, things, possessions. But Aristotle saw something deeper. For him, the most real thing about any entity wasn't what it was, but what it was doing. Energeia — often translated as "actuality" — is better understood as being-at-work. It is the ongoing activity of a thing fulfilling its nature. A seed is not yet a tree; a sleeping musician is not yet playing. Energeia is the moment — and the sustained act — of becoming what you truly are.
